Venetian Plaster is an American product that refers to a polished stucco finish when painting the walls. There is no plaster involved and there is nothing Venetian about it! Architects and designers in the US use the term to communicate a particular type of wall finish that uses a mix of lime, cement and sand along with acrylic polymers to obtain an ancient stucco effect.

How to apply venetian plaster

Apply venetian plasterVenetian plaster can be applied to most walls and ceilings so long as the surface is smooth and flat. To begin, fill and sand any cracks or holes on the surface to be painted, wash off any dirt, and cover with flat paint. The can of Venetian plaster to be used may be already tinted; if not, add tint to achieve the desired shade and mix well. Apply a thin coat of plaster spreading it with varying lengths and spatula or trowel strokes. Once this dries, apply the next coat with the same color of Venetian plaster. At least a 24 hour drying period should elapse before the final step of burnishing the surface, which involves rubbing with fine sandpaper. Lastly, applying a topcoat of paste wax is recommended in rooms with high moisture (such as bathrooms) and more usage.
